Sports nutrition: useful or nonsense?

Anyone who trains regularly wants to see quick results. Even if you're not a top athlete, you're probably hoping to get not only general fitness from exercise, but also a well-defined body.

It's a good thing that the supermarket often has its own shelf with sports nutrition. It helps on the way to your dream body, doesn't it? We clear up old wives' tales, exaggerated risks, but also false promises and show you what sports nutrition can really achieve.

What Is Sports Nutrition Anyway?

Sports nutrition in the classic sense is a dietary supplement. These are nutrients that the body needs for daily survival. These also occur in your normal food, but they are highly concentrated in sports nutrition. Such nutritional supplements are generally harmless and can support the body, especially those who are physically active. However, they are not a miracle cure, because the best protein shake doesn't help if you don't train additionally.

Apart from natural sports nutrition, there are also substances on the market that you should not use without hesitation. Anabolic steroids, for example, are well known and disreputable among bodybuilders. These artificially produced hormones are by no means the same as natural nutritional supplements. Artificially supplied testosterone may support muscle formation, but at the same time it promotes a change in voice tone and body hair. 

Protein For Muscle Strength

However, supplements from the protein products category can provide useful support. Because protein is part of the menu anyway and is involved in important processes in the organism, including the formation of muscle mass.

The health society recommends around 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day for average consumers. If you are very active, it can be up to 1.7 grams per kilogram of body weight.

A protein-rich diet is primarily helpful here. But if you don't cover your needs, there's nothing wrong with occasionally supplementing with sports nutrition. Supplement, mind you, because subsisting solely on sports nutrition is not a good idea.

Superfoods For Superpower

Sports nutrition manufacturers have also discovered particularly nutrient-rich foods. And for a good reason. Because so-called superfoods are a real enrichment for your diet, especially if you are a physically active person. Let's just look at the example of the goji berry: It is packed with essential amino acids, A and B vitamins and covers your daily iron requirement by consuming just 50 grams of berries. This mix of nutrients is promising and is actually a good idea as part of sports nutrition.

In the end, it's not just sports nutrition that determines your training success. It is important that you are active and also eat a balanced diet. High-quality sports nutrition can definitely serve as a good supplement.
